Call for Speakers 2023

We are looking for speakers for Grave Matters: Death Studies Discussion Group for 2023. Each session follows a loose theme with three ten-minute papers followed by questions and discussion.

Proposed dates for 2023 are (all sessions run from 6pm to 7pm GMT):

Suggested themes:

Death & Nature

We would welcome papers on the themes of, by no means limited to, any aspect of death and the natural world. This could include papers on:

  • Plant symbolism and death in literature, film or art.
  • Garden cemeteries
  • ‘Natural’ or ‘unnatural’ deaths
  • Ecological deathways

Death & Feeling

We would welcome papers on the themes of, by no means limited to, any aspect of the emotional response to death. This could include papers on:

  • Excessive grief
  • Mourning clothes and material culture as conduits of emotion
  • Expressing emotion at funerals
  • Condolence

The Business of Death

We would welcome papers on the themes of, by no means limited to, any aspect of the business of death. This could include papers on:

  • The Victorian commodification of death
  • The development of undertaking as a business
  • Ceremonies of death and how they have changed and developed
  • The future of body disposal
