Grave Matters: Death Studies Discussion Group – a call for speakers!

Could you virtually present a ten minute paper on one of the following themes for Grave Matters?

The dates for the future sessions are:

Monday 27 June

Monday 3 October

Monday 14 November

All sessions run virtually from 6pm to 7pm GMT and include three presentations of ten minutes each. The themes are:

Hauntings:

We would welcome papers on the themes of, by no means limited to, any aspect of ‘hauntings’. This could include papers on:

  • Ghosts, poltergeists and other supernatural activity
  • Spiritualism, seances or any means of contacting the dead
  • Haunted houses
  • The haunted mind 
  • Hauntings in art, film, photography or theatre
  • Literary hauntings

Conceptions of the Afterlife:

We would welcome papers on the themes of, but not limited to, any aspect of conceptions of the afterlife. This could include topics such as:

  • Representations of Heaven, Paradise or the beatific vision
  • Representations of Hell, Purgatory or infernal regions
  • Representations of Limbo or in-between places 
  • Celestial/demoniac beings
  • Representations of soul travel or Near Death Experiences
  • Literary and/or artistic conceptions of the afterlife 

Ceremonies of Death:

We are looking for presenters to talk about any aspect relating to the ceremonies of death. 

This could include topics such as:

  • last rites, funerals, cremation
  • wakes, mourning rituals, laying out the dead, 
  • burial, prayers for the dead
  • Ars moriendi or a ‘good death’ rituals
